Sensei Kurt Buxey

Hi, welcome to our website!
I started my karate career in the early 70's, under three instructors Shihan Mike Lambert, Shihan Kim Roberts & Shihan Dave Arnold. Shihan Mike Lambert & Shihan Dave Arnold trained on the Isle of Wight & Shihan Kim Roberts in Southampton. We would train 5 nights a week in Southampton & all day Sunday on the Isle of Wight.
In the early 80's, martial arts was made very popular by film & Television, so the club changed its name to Goju-Ryu Karate Remnei before changing again in 1982 to St Mary's Karate club where Sensei Gavin Mulholland & myself graded for 1st Dan ( we passed ). Then in 1983-early 84 we moved the club to the west of Southampton to a place called Thornhill & yet another name change this time, to Eastpoint Karate Club (which is still going strong to this day & run by my brother Sensei Kevin Buxey ). In that same year Gavin & myself took our 2nd Dan Student Pages & passed.
Then in 1985-86 I broke away from Eastpoint Karate Club & started out on my own & named the club Solent Goju-Ryu Karate, I still trained with Shihan Kim Roberts at his house on weekends. The club started to grow so fast that I had to open more clubs so it became 6 days a week again. Then came my 3rd Dan grade in Birkenhead, near Liverpool on a course with Shihan Kim & sensei Stevie Goldstone (I did not know I was going to grade until the line up was called). I was only there to give a hand with teaching those that had done their grade, but I did pass the grade. In 1987 the club joined Bukonkai International. In 1992, I got my 4th Dan grade during a specialist Kata course in Reading in front of a panel of instructors & had to wait 2 weeks for the results.
The club grew stronger & stronger we then joined the A.M.A in 1995 before leaving in1996 because it had become too political. In 1997 we joined the E.K.O where I got my 5th Dan in Birmingham. In 1999 the club formed its own association called Solent Martial Arts Association with Sensei Dave Andrews & secretary Sue Snow. I was awarded 6th Dan in 2006.
